Living Will: A simple solution to a difficult problem

Theresa Marie "Terri" Schiavo (December 3, 1963 – March 31, 2005), from St. Petersburg, Florida, United States was a woman who suffered brain damage and became dependent on a feeding tube. She collapsed in her home on February 25, 1990, and experienced respiratory and cardiac arrest, leading to 15 years of institutionalization and a diagnosis of persistent vegetative state (PVS). In 1998, Michael Schiavo, her husband and guardian, petitioned the Pinellas County Circuit Court to remove her feeding tube.

Her parents, Robert and Mary Schindler, opposed this, arguing she was conscious. The court determined that Terri would not wish to continue life-prolonging measures. The battle stretched on for seven years.

In your Living Will you decide what you want to occur if you are in a persistent vegetative state.

Avoid family conflict by stating your wishes and prevent a situation like the Schiavo case.

What are YOUR answers to the following questions?

What would you want to happen if you were in that situation?

Have you made the decision, and executed a Legal Document?
